Lessons from a Global Pandemic

As the Atlantic Coast Conference’s men’s basketball tournament tips off tomorrow in Brooklyn, I reflect back to almost exactly two years ago, when my mom and I were sitting in the Greensboro Coliseum, watching the evening action for that year’s tourney (#GoDeacs).

We started hearing rumblings from folks around us: The NBA had shut down, and there was talk that there’d be no fans in attendance for the next day’s ACC quarterfinals. We had no idea that we were on the verge of the world shutting down.

It’s hard to put into words how 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝘂𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲’𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱. We’ve been slapped across the face with our society’s inequities as well as how we are never guaranteed tomorrow, and we’ve had to adjust.

This period has emphasized these productivity fundamentals:
🌻 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲. Do the best you can throughout extenuating of circumstances.
🧘🏻‍♀️ 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲. The more you can roll with all the ups and downs of changes, the better.
👩🏻‍💻 𝗔𝗶𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. Whether life’s emotional rollercoaster or the constantly growing and evolving demands for your time and attention, distractions are everywhere, taking energy from getting results.
⏳ 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀. What you do once matters, but what you do repeatedly matters more. Have a morning routine that sets you up for success. Set breaks throughout the day for movement, eating and staying hydrated. End each day with the next in mind. Determine how to be held accountable.

As in productivity and teamwork alike, making a plan and pivoting as needed are vital. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗲𝗱?
