Playing Poker for the Greater Good

If you play poker but haven’t figured out how to use those skills for good, you are missing out!

Back in November, the energy in the room at The Ritz in Raleigh was palpable and contagious for the 2nd Annual Raleigh Texas Hold’em Event.

Folks were having fun while raising much needed funds for Lung Cancer Initiative and Helene Foundation to save the lives of those touched by cancer, especially lung cancer as the leading cancer-killer of Americans.

Next year, I want to play, too, but, for this year, it was such fun cheering lung cancer survivor Susan Kjellqvist to the final table as well as pulling for the Susan C. Hicks Hope Charities’ table and everyone representing Lung Cancer Initiative in attendance.

Tasty BBQ, hot dogs and pork sliders from Crave Hot Dogs & BBQ, quality raffle prizes like those from Apple as well as Huck Cycles and great live music from local bands… Plus, the in-arena voice of the Carolina Hurricanes kept us pumped all night!

You won’t want to miss next year’s event so be sure to sign-up for emails via AllintoFightCancer.org or follow them on social media across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and X.

So Many Options to Play Poker for Good

Although there can be a geographic element to community, it is the definition as “a feeling of fellowship with others as a result of sharing common attitudes” that is most impactful, and I’m so grateful to the women of Calamity Janes Poker for bringing us all together in community to raise much needed funds for those non-profit organizations doing such good around us. Yes, this Powerhouse Parks made it to the final table in an effort to support Lung Cancer Initiative at this year's Galentine’s Day Poker for Charity event, but it was Big Stacks Stanford who brought home the big bucks, playing for Step Up Ministry. Thank you to Hannah Parker, Lily Holden, Maggie Kane and Sarah Cunningham Jackson for continuing to cultivate this incredible community!

Meanwhile, if you are concerned or self-conscious about not knowing how to play poker, have no fear. Each event includes a tutorial to kick things off, you get these little cards that remind you of the rules, and there are always folks around to keep newbies on the right path. Such a fun way to fundraise for good!
